Background
- Genville Dodge was a General for the Union Army during the Civil War.
Involvement in the Transcontinental Railroad
- Dodge led the military campaign against the Plains Indians in 1865 which was attempting to prevent the Indians from attacking settlers and railroad workers.
- Dodge became the Chief Engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad Company and used his skills to push the railroad towards completion.
- Dodge became was elected to Congress in 1866 and used his position to lobby, or build support in Congress, for the UP.
